Nestled along the picturesque Sacramento River, Crawdads on the River is a standout American restaurant that masterfully marries fresh seafood with a lively Cajun twist. From the moment you arrive at 1375 Garden Hwy, the inviting aroma of spices and the sight of glistening water set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
The cuisine here is a celebration of riverfront freshness and robust Louisiana flavors. Signature dishes like the Seafood Simmer — a rich Creole broth bubbling with shrimp, clams, mussels, and tender cod — evoke warmth and comfort with every bite. Equally captivating are the Blackened Fish Tacos, where fresh fish meets pickled red onions, purple cabbage, fire-roasted salsa, and creamy cotija cheese for a perfect balance of smoky, tangy, and cool textures.
Start your culinary journey with starters such as the Ahi Nachos, layered with ahi tuna, ponzu, macadamia nuts, and crisp wontons, or the Crispy Fried Green Beans coated in Cajun spices and served alongside a smoky chipotle aioli dipping sauce. The Crawdads Chowder Fries, topped generously with clams in a bacon-infused chowder, adds a bold, indulgent touch that has become a local favorite.
Between the bread, you’ll find dishes bursting with both comfort and creativity. The Blat (bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato on Texas toast) brings luscious creaminess and crunch, while the Fish Sandwich features beer-battered cod layered with slaw, tartar sauce, and a zesty creole aioli on a brioche bun — each bite delivering a satisfying contrast of flaky fish and vibrant flavors.
Customers often praise Crawdads not just for its exquisite fare but for its warm and attentive service, paired with a welcoming atmosphere that flows from indoors to a charming outdoor seating area overlooking the river. Emily Rogers describes it as “the most beautiful place to grab some excellent seafood,” recommending a visit just before sunset for a truly breathtaking view. Gerhard Stadel echoes the sentiment with his appreciation for the “great service, great food, and great atmosphere,” highlighting the clam chowder as a must-have dish, especially with its savory bacon topping.
For those looking to indulge in true Southern comfort by the water, Crawdads on the River is the perfect destination. Whether you crave the boldness of Cajun pasta or the freshness of oysters and crawfish corn potatoes, this gem offers a dynamic menu that appeals to seafood lovers and casual diners alike. The river’s gentle breeze, paired with the vibrant plate in front of you, transforms every visit into a heartfelt celebration of flavor and place.
This is the most beautiful place to grab some excellent seafood! The steaming bowl of clams, shrimp, mussels and cod was amazing! I would recommend going just before sunset the view is incredible! Doesn’t get any better then Crawdads by the river! Will return!
Great Service, Great Food, & Great Atmosphere. Clam Chowder soup is a must-have...... Awesome flavor & the Bacon on top puts it over the edge! Fish & Chips comes with 4 healthy sized filets which is a perfect portion.
Very nice hidden gem. Great location, overseeing Sacramento river. Indoor and outdoor seatings available. A space for rent for event with stage and its own bar. Restrooms are clean. Parking is a bit narrow between cars. Be careful if wearing high heels as it has a bit stairs to go down from parking lot to the front door of the restaurant. Best food: CAJUN PASTA!
This is a hopping little joint! Walking across the river was pretty neat to get to it. So if you have a handicap access I would call first to see if it is available because I didn't see one.. The food was fantastic and the service was very quick and even though they were super busy she was very attentive to me. I was a single diner traveling from Michigan and I would definitely return if I ever come back
First time here, and it was a great experience, called in earlier to reserve a spot facing the river. Nice options for food a Louisiana spin with seafood which was different. We enjoyed our time and food overall was great. I had the Alaskan Cod. Sister just didn't like her burrito. She said there wasn't much flavor. Cod nachos delicious but a bit pricy. Yulia helped us out was friendly, would recommend.
Came on Saturday around 3:45 p.m. with my husband. The place was busy, and both the host and server were working really hard. The host even helped run food! My husband decided to make a reservation for 4:15 p.m. so we could sit outside by the riverfront. The vibe was pretty casual, kind of like a bar where you can catch a game near the counter. Occasionally, you could smell a bit of gas from the boat motors, but it didn’t last long. The food was okay, but the service was amazing.
